چکیده

This studydevelops a framework for the detection and analysis of stress/anxiety emotional states through video-recorded facial cues. A thorough experimental protocol was established to induce systematic variability in affective states (neutral, relaxed and stressed/anxious) through a variety of external and internal stressors. The analysis was focused mainly on non-voluntary and semi-voluntary facial cues in order to estimate the emotion representation more objectively. Features under investigation included eye-related events, mouth activity, head motion parameters and heart rate estimated through camerabased photoplethysmography. A feature selection procedure was employed to select the most robust features followed by classification schemes discriminating between stress/anxiety and neutral states nxiety tress link rate ead motion with reference to a relaxed state in each experimental phase. In addition, a ranking transformation was proposed utilizing self reports in order to investigate the correlation of facial parameters with a participant perceived amount of stress/anxiety. The results indicated that, specific facial cues, derived from eye activity, mouth activity, headmovements and camera based heart activity achieve good accuracy and are suitable as discriminative indicators of stress and anxiety.

Lonely adolescents exhibit heightened sensitivity for facial cues of emotion.

Contradicting evidence exists regarding the link between loneliness and sensitivity to facial cues of emotion, as loneliness has been related to better but also to worse performance on facial emotion recognition tasks. This study aims to contribute to this debate and extends previous work by (a) focusing on both accuracy and sensitivity to detecting positive and negative expressions, (b) contro...

Thermal spatio-temporal data for stress recognition

Stress is a serious concern facing our world today, motivating the development of a better objective understanding through the use of non-intrusive means for stress recognition by reducing restrictions to natural human behavior. As an initial step in computer vision-based stress detection, this paper proposes a temporal thermal spectrum (TS) and visible spectrum (VS) video database ANUStressDB ...

De-Identified Feature-based Visualization of Facial Expression for Enhanced Text Chat

The lack of visibility in text-based chat can hinder communication, especially when nonverbal cues are instrumental to the production and understanding of messages. However, communicating rich nonverbal cues such as facial expressions may be technologically more costly (e.g., demand of bandwidth for video streaming) and socially less desirable (e.g., disclosing other personal and context inform...

Observer trait anxiety is associated with response bias to patient facial pain expression independent of pain catastrophizing

BACKGROUND Top-down characteristics of an observer influence the detection and estimation of a sufferer's pain. A comprehensive understanding of these characteristics is important because they influence observer helping behaviours and the sufferer's experience of pain. OBJECTIVES To examine the hypothesis that individuals who score high in trait anxiety would perceive more intense pain in oth...

Towards a dynamic expression recognition system under facial occlusion

Facial occlusion is a challenging research topic in facial expression recognition (FER). This has resulted in the need to develop some interesting facial representations and occlusion detection methods in order to extend the FER to uncontrolled environments. It should be noted that most of the previous work focuses on these two issues separately, and on static images. We are thus motivated to p...
